As this map shows the Colne Valley Railway served 4 Airfields during  the second world war.

  • Earls Colne
  • Gosfield
  • Ridgewell
  • Wethersfield

Not shown on the map is Dept 526. The simple designation was for one of the most critical sites in the US bombing campaign in Europe, the Forward Ammunitiuon Dept at Bures. This was a massive site accommodating substantial stockpiles of bombs and munitions intended for airfields in Essex and South Suffolk.

Most of these munitions were off oaded from trains at Earls Colne. Whitle Colne and Halstead were used as overflow yards should Earls Colne not be able to accept more wagons.
